The kernel is period.js (the shell: walls classed by what they face, bays, storeys, openings, the masonry check) and periodbuild.js (this building: parts, roof, site, plans). The same shells stand in the city at polis · morph.
How a building stood up decided its face. A timber frame carries the floors, so its windows sit small between the posts and its upper storeys oversail the street. Load-bearing brick takes every window out of the piers that hold up everything above it, so the windows are a fixed width with a pier as wide between, and the walls thicken toward the ground; the check below is done in working stress, with the joists spanning the short way. Stone over an iron shop floor opened the ground to shops. A concrete frame frees the face into ribbons; a curtain wall is a grid hung on the frame.
The brick is drawn by a shader, brick by brick, from each surface's place in the world: Flemish bond on the Georgian house (a stretcher and a header in every course, the headers burnt darker, each course set a quarter brick over), stretcher bond on the villa, 215 × 65 mm bricks in 10 mm lime joints; ashlar coursing on the stone, courses of slate and tile on the roofs. It fades to the average colour where the bricks get smaller than a pixel.
